Mario Brothers Birthday Cake

The twins are going to be 3 years old next week.  OMGosh!  I can’t believe how the time has gone by so fast.  Since their birthday is the day before Mother’s Day, we decided to have their big party yesterday (a week early).  They LOVE Super Mario Brothers, so I decided to have a Mario Birthday.

I got really ambitious and decided that I would try to make a Mario cake.  I’ll have birthday party pictures later this week, but today I wanted to share my cake with you.  I think it turned out SO cool and I am very proud of it.

I used this recipe from Hershey’s to make my chocolate cake.  I have to say this chocolate cake is awesome!  It was so good and moist, yet dense enough to make a great decorating cake.  I borrowed my ex-mother-in-law’s 12 Inch Round Cake Pans along with her giant cup cake pan.  I then started with a sky blue frosting color as the base.

At Michael’s Craft Store, I was able to get some pre-made, ready to roll, fondant.  I used the yellow fondant and a Christmas cookie cutter to make the star’s.  Then I used a shot glass on red fondant to create the small circles for the man-eating flowers.  The fondant cut-outs and two shades of green buttercream, and I had this:

The giant cupcakes were going to be my one-up mushrooms.  I was a little bummed that when I was putting the white frosting on the cupcake bases, the crumbs kept coming through.  I’ll have to find a way to prevent that in the future.  My thought was to have 2 one-up mushrooms on the cake, one for each twin.  The mushrooms that are on top of the cake, are covered in red fondant.  But I frosted the other four with red colored buttercream.  I got the Mario and Luigi figures from Amazon.  Here is the finished cake:

And here are my happy boys getting ready to sing Happy Birthday:

The boys are having the best time today.  Out of all their birthday presents, they have spent the day playing with their Mario & Luigi cake figures.  LOL.  I’ll have more birthday pictures later.  It was a great day!

  14. Hey girlfriend, you are awesome, I’ve been trying to find ideas cause I am celebrating my son’s 8th b-day, and this is wonderful. Thank you for sharing!!!

  15. ok, so I’m in your same dilema! My son is turning 5 in two weeks (a day before mother’s day! lol) and he LOVES mario bros. I’ve called a dozen bakery’s and they don’t do mario bros theme cakes, I’m not so good in the baking department as you but for my son I think I’ll try it. Can you give me any tips? I’m going to try to make your cake.
    thanks,

  16. Michelle says:

Very impressed by this cake! And believe me, I have been on so many websites looking for ideas on how to make a Super Mario Bros cake that does not look impossible!

Overall, what you did does not look too incredibly scary. My one question, was this your first experience with fondant? How easy was the ready to roll fondant from Michael’s to work with?

Again very, VERY impressed. If I can pull off something similar, my little boy will be ecstatic!

  17. Michelle says:

One more question…how big are the Mario and Luigi figurines?

Hi Michelle! Thanks for the compliments on my cake. I was so happy with it. The Michael’s fondant was easy to use. It’s in small sections and rolled easily with a rolling pin. Then the figurines were 3 inches or so. I ordered them off Amazon.

      Good luck with your cake!!

  18. What size of the Mario & Luigi did you use?

  19. Your cake looks AWESOME! I actually was able to create my sons Super Mario cake using your cake as a reference. So THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the inspiration! :) it was a big hit!

  20. Amber Morrison says:

Are these smaller regular cupcakes or the giant ones? I amde a ginat one for my daughters birthday and these look smaller? I am trying to get ideas for my 6 year olds birthday in July. He wants a Mario cake.

  21. GIRL!! My boys flipped OUT over this cake!!! Awesome!

  22. I love this cake…..im going to try to bake this cake today for my nephews birthday party. He loves Mario. I know he will love this cake. Your really talented..thanks for sharing your idea..
