Enough with the Whine! Bring on the Wine! {Week 9}

This is my week to share a bottle of wine and in the quest for a funky and uniquely named bottle, I decided to try a Menage a’ Trois California Red.  I was really on the ball this round because I actually purchased and drank this bottle about 2 weeks ago.  Go me!

Menage a Trois is really a crazy name for a bottle of wine.  I wonder what kind of google searches this will bring to my site?  HA.

This is how the company describes their bottle of red:

Even if red wine is not your speed, give our Ménage à Trois Red a try. This wine exposes the fresh, ripe, jam-like fruit that is the calling card of California wine. Ménage à Trois Red brings together three strange bedfellows.

On top we’ve got Zinfandel, a saucy tease that brings blackberry and raspberry jam to the relationship. Merlot, with its generous mouth feel and red fruits, fits perfectly in the middle. The rich flavors and firm tannins of Cabernet Sauvignon make it the ideal.

I have to say that I liked my Menage a Trois…just okay.  I was really hoping that I would enjoy it more but things were awkward and I got self conscious…Oh wait, I forgot I was talking about wine.

This wine tasted a bit bitter and heavy to me.  But I drank it in my classy Shrek glass and enjoyed it enough to finish every last drop, so it must not have been that bad, right?

I purchased Menage a Trois at Costco for around $7.00, so it was an inexpensive wine to take the edge off of a long testosterone filled day.

I’m really excited about my next review (in three weeks) because I will be partnering with the California Wine Club to share some fabulous California wines with you.  While you wait for that, be sure to visit my partners in wine, Heather and Cheryl to see what great drinks they have coming up.

Have you had Menage a Trois before (and I’m talking about the WINE!)?  How did you like it?

  1. Self concious…lol…you crack me up Rhea. I’m glad you liked it enough to drink even though it wasn’t a fav. I’ve never had one – wine or otherwise 😉 I’m wondering about blends now, we’ve seen a few blends and it seems like it’s a bit of a trend. No?

  2. I’m getting a kick out of seeing the names of the wines each week. I’m one that when I drank wine, I chose by how pretty the label was.

  3. I get self conscious when I drink wine… I can be a spilly talker plus, I tend to not care about the muffin top over my pants when I’m drinking wine. I think if I were in a Menage a Trois, I’d be even MORE self conscious. I’m already stalking my next fun bottle of wine.

  4. I purchased a bottle of this wine about 2 months ago at Kroger’s. It was recommended to me by another customer that had tried it. She said it really turned her on to wine, lol. It’s still in my refrigerator waiting for a special occasion to open it. Also, it’s still in there, because I wasn’t quite sure how it was going to taste. I just googled the name, and your website popped up. Thanks so much for the review, and I will probably be drinking it soon. Jen Goudeau, Pineville, LA

  5. I’ll be having my first Menage a Trois at a party this Saturday evening so will update everyone after I recover 😉

  6. With all the jokes aside, I really, REALLY enjoy this wine. If you are looking for a special occasion wine, then this probably not the one, but it is a great daily drinker or a nice change to a varietal wine. I spent the last week in San Francisco and had some really ‘nice’ wines by both the $$ and the scores (all Pinot Noir’s this go around), several SeaSmokes (Southing and Tens), along with a couple of Sonoma Coast Pinot’s, and when I came home, the Menage a Trois was the easiest drinker. Now I do tend to lean towards Cabs (both Franc and Sauvigon) and blends, so going with a varietal like Pinot Noir is generally out of my comfort zone (although a Merry Edwards is really good). Again, all jokes aside, give this bottle a try, open it, let it sit for 30 minutes or so and then get after it. :)

  7. I really enjoy this wine. If you are patient, and allow the aroma to motive taste. Holding the contents momentarily on the tongue, the variation of berry flavors presents nicely. There is a pinch, at the end but the reward is a descent flavor at a descent price point. Menage a Trois provides a relaxing ambience, which caters to the platte of those who prefer a less sugary wine.

  8. I had a bottle of this wine this weekend. I was also intrigued by the combination of the Zinfnadel, Merlot and the Cab. I tasted the berries instantly, but there seemed to be a hint of vanilla on the back end made for a very nice finish. I think for the price, this is a great wine and I would buy it again.

  9. I drank this wine on the New year 2012 at a friend’s house, and I continue buy them from Costco ever since. I t is a great taste of wine with a price less than Napa wine. I love it and today I just went to Costco again got me a hole box.

  10. I tried “menage a trois”– Red .If you like the strong sour taste type of wine, you will definitely love this!!! .
I will never buy this again .

  11. This is my absolute favorite!!BEverytime I drink it with friends it becomes their favorite too….. I love it!! I drink it often and I am in Germany and there are great wines here…this is still my favorite.!

  12. My hunny came home with a bottle for me today for valentines day. I’m drinking it now. I like it. I tend to like my reds cold but after reading a review I have it breathing now for the next glass. I like a dry wine so I find this a little smoother than I’m used too But I would buy it again
