I’ve always been a “glass half-full” kinda gal.  I usually see the good in people and the hope in situations.  My optimism drives my husband crazy.  But sometimes, things happen that make me scratch my head and wonder “why?”  Things that make no sense to me and make me question the good in people and society.

This is one of those situations.

Take for instance a big insurance company that can hide behind their desk and decide to deny therapy for a beautiful three year old girl who only want’s to walk along side her big sister.

How is that for unjust?

My friend, Cheryl, has devoted her life to bettering the lives of her daughters.  She has been fighting since MARCH to get her Canadian insurance company, Manulife Financial, to approve Botox Injections for her daughter who has Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy.  Because of the CP, Jillian can not walk.

Jillian and her sister, Lauren ask their mom, “why don’t Jillian’s legs work?”  It is a heartbreaking question and one that Cheryl struggles with answering.

A few months ago, their doctor recommended them for Botox Injections, a very proven and effective treatment for CP.  It relieves the spasticity in the muscles allowing them to relax and be pain-free.  It allows the person with CP to control those muscles.  It allowed a three year old girl to walk for the very first time.

This is Jillian standing flat-footed for the very first time.  She went on to ride a bike and climb stairs!  She was SO proud of herself and it made everyone around her cry happy tears.

Now, the Botox Injections that gave Jillian control over her legs this round was not covered by her insurance, they were generously donated.  The doctors and pharmaceutical company had hoped that by getting one good round into their little patient, they could then show the insurance company that it worked and then they would decide to cover it.

Nope.

Manulife Financial does not care one bit that this therapy worked and that it helped a child walk.  They still came down with a big fat DENIED.

This post got a little long winded I know.  But this just makes me so angry and sad.  A little girl is being denied the quality of life that she deserves because of some bureaucrat behind a desk.  Do they have no soul?

Please visit the Beautiful Side of Hectic where Cheryl has more pictures and video’s of her daughter walking and weigh in on the conversation.  What do you think?  Is this wrong?  I was always told that Canadian Healthcare was so great…this is NOT great.
