Disneyland Surprise!

My sweet babies turned SIX years old this past week and I can’t believe how big they are getting.  They are turning into little men right before my very eyes.  We had decided to surprise the boys with a day trip to Disneyland (a huge advantage of living only 2 hours away from the house of Mouse).  My original plan was to surprise them ON their birthday (Wednesday) and go spend the day in Anaheim, but work schedules prevented that from happening and we had to settle on the day after (Thursday).

It was so much fun keeping this big secret!  I pined over how I would surprise them for weeks.  I asked my friends how to surprise them.  I got lots of suggestions, here are a few of my favorites:

  1. My friend Krista suggested an elaborate scavenger hunt where they could search for clues.  Fun, but way out of my creativity level.
  2. Leah was the first to suggest:  “Totally make it like they are going to school.  Even pack the car with their backpacks and then head to Disney.”

The problem I had with just getting in the car and driving is that my mom was coming with us and needed to be in on the surprise.  I wasn’t sure I could pull it off with grandma in the car.  They are bright kids!  So, I decided that I would make posters and get balloons.  We would get the kids up (an hour early…DH changed the time on all the clocks!), get them ready for school, then grandma and I would meet them outside the front door.

We waited an excruciatingly long minute before the boys came bouncing out of the house.  You can hear my mom and I whispering and wondering what was taking SO long…but their excitement at learning of our surprise was priceless!

We hopped into the car and drove one hour forty-five minutes to the Happiest Place on Earth.  It was truly a magical day.  The boys are finally big enough to ride all the big rides and we wasted no time breaking them in.  The crowds were at a minimum and we rode a few roller-coasters more than once.

Here are some pictures that I posted to Instagram:

So, how was your Thursday?

What an awesome surprise. Seemed like a very long minute to me as well waiting for them to come out. Can’t imagine how long it seemed for you and your mom.

Aww, what a great surprise. They are going to remember it FOREVER as I can remember going to Disney when I was their age..

What a fun day you had!

I love the picture of the three of them smiling so happily; it is so sweet! What a fun surprise! I keep saying I should surprise my kids like this one day, but I get too caught up in the excitement to keep it to myself!
