Whale Watching in Dana Point

In all of my 40 years, I had never been whale watching, until now.  Dana Wharf Sportfishing and Whale Watching is located in the beautiful sea-side town of Dana Point, California.  It is about an hour and a half from where I live in San Diego.  On Saturday afternoon, the weekend before the boys went back to school, we made the trip up the coast in search of some Blue Whales.

DanaWharfWhaleWatchingThe boys were so excited!  Gabe especially was thrilled at the thought of getting to see the largest mammal on the planet.  We set off at 5pm and the Captain knew exactly where to go.  About 30 minutes later we spotted our whale.

We learned that blue whales surface for 7-8 breaths, or for about a 5 minute stretch we get to watch. Then they will go back under for approximately 8 minutes. The Captain said they were fairly predictable in this regard.  The Captain gave us facts about their size (can reach 100 tons!) and how they eat and the size of their offspring while the whale was under.  He said sometimes they are in feeding mode and would stay pretty much in the same location, going up and down to eat and breath.  Our whale today was in “traveling” mode.  It was headed North up the coast and we followed it for about an hour.

Blue Whale off Dana PointThe captain was great and following the whale to be sure everyone got to see it and get pictures.  Unfortunately, we only tracked one whale today.  It was a quiet evening and the whales must have been chilling somewhere else because we only got the pleasure of seeing one.  Many times you will get several or a family.  Just a couple days later, Dana Wharf’s Facebook Page reported seeing a momma and baby!

WhaleWatchingatDanaPointWhen we started out on our trek, it was hot and sunny but heading back in, the marine layer rolled in and it was quite chilly.  So if you go on the 5pm boat be sure to bring a sweatshirt!  I’m so glad I thought ahead and had them for the boys.

Just before we headed back to the docks, we came across a pod of common dolphins.  They were SO FUN!

My overall experience whale watching was absolutely fun! I only wish we could have seen more than one whale, but what can you do?
