Cleaning Your Oven With No Harmful Chemicals

Theives Graphic

Holy Heck Ya’ll!  I royally impressed myself tonight and I couldn’t wait to share.

I couple months ago I signed up with Young Living Essential Oils because I really wanted to experience all the “oil hype” for myself.  I was excited to try out various blends on my kids and on my oldest’s ADHD (quickly to back up…I bought several no-name oils first and immediately regretted it because they did NOTHING for anything).  It’s no secret that I tend to run on the natural/crunchy side of life and was intrigued with the claims that essential oils could replace many (if not all) traditional medications and household products.  Just you wait!  I will be sharing what I find with you!

You’re welcome.

Anyhow, on to the purpose of THIS post.  I hate cleaning the oven.  It is a big fat pain in the butt and I always put it off for as long as possible.  I don’t think I had cleaned my oven in a few years (sorry, mom).  I HATE the smell of traditional oven cleaners.  They burn my throat and make my eyes water.  They are quite possibly the worst, most evil cleaner made.  A quick google search turned up the following list of typical symptoms one can expect from using oven cleaner:

  • Airways and lungs
    • Breathing difficulty — from breathing in fumes
    • Throat swelling — may also cause breathing difficulty
  • Eyes, ears, nose, and throat
    • Severe pain in the throat
    • Severe pain or burning in the nose, eyes, ears, lips, or tongue
    • Vision loss
  • Gastrointestinal
    • Abdominal pain
    • Bloody stools
    • Burns and possible holes of the esophagus (food pipe)
    • Vomiting, possibly bloody
  • Heart and blood
    • Collapse
    • Low blood pressure — develops rapidly
    • Severe change in blood acid level — leads to organ damage
  • Skin
    • Burns
    • Holes in the skin or underlying tissues
    • Irritation

Yeeeeaaahhhh.  That’s awesome.  Not.

I can’t believe they sell this crap to people.  No special equipment or permits required.  All this risk just to have a clean oven?  No, thank you!  I would rather cook in my dirty, non-toxic oven.

Until now!

I saw a post on Facebook where a gal used plain-ole Thieves Household Cleaner on her oven with fabulous results.  I figured I had some Thieves Household Cleaner on hand so why not give it a try?

I filled a regular spray bottle (thank you, Dollar Tree) with a 10:1 dilution.  The bottle has markings on it, so I poured Thieves Household Cleaner in to the “10″ mark and filled the rest with water.

Now the Thieves Household Cleaner instructions recommend that you dilute 15:1 for “heavy degreasing” but because I am math challenged, I went with 10:1 since that was on the bottle and I didn’t have to think about it (after deliberating with my not-so-math-challenged husband, we determined that 10:1 is a stronger solution than what I needed.  You make the decision on works best for you!).

I pretty much just drenched the inside of my oven with my cleaner and waited about an hour.  At first, I thought closing the oven door was a good idea but because the cleaner is fully liquid it just dripped out and down the front of my bottom oven (I have a double oven).  I decided to leave the door open.  This, unfortunately caused the door to dry out before the inside of the oven and it didn’t wipe off as easily.

After about an hour I grabbed my trusty steel wool and and dove in.  I wasn’t sure what to expect but, as soon as I started “scrubbing” I realized the grime was just sloughing off.  It was so easy!  The sides of my oven did require a little more elbow grease (I think the whole “dripping down and not soaking” thing happened again) but the bottom of my oven just wiped right out.  No effort required!

I was SO IMPRESSED!  Here, look again…just for good measure:

So awesome.

I wanted to mention that I use Thieves Household Cleaner for EVERYTHING in my house.  My kitchen, the bathroom, mirrors and floors.  You name it, Thieves can clean it.  It saves me a lot of money because I am not buying  many separate products for all my needs (ie: toilet bowl cleaner, glass cleaner, counter disinfectant, floor cleaner, etc.  Heck I can even use it in my laundry).  And the Thieves essential oil blend is well renowned for its germ fighting properties.

Thieves® was created based on research about four thieves in France who covered themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing plague victims. This proprietary essential oil blend was university tested for its cleansing abilities. It is highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health.

When my kids are getting sick I use the Thieves oil (not the household cleaner blend) in my diffuser to help with nighttime coughing and congestion.  I also put it on the bottoms of their feet to help support their bodies in fighting off the yucks.  It is truly amazing and effective.

Do you use essential oils for household chores?  Let me know what you use and where!  I am still learning and would love to learn your tricks.
